We are delighted that Third Form student, Aahan, won Second Place in the T-shirt Design category of the 2024 Show Racism the Red Card Schools Competition. Aahan and his father attended the awards ceremony last week at Wolverhampton Wanderers’ stadium, where the young designer was recognised for his creativity and commitment to promoting an anti-racism message.
The Show Racism the Red Card Schools Competition is an annual event that provides a platform for young people of all ages and abilities to reflect on racism and express their thoughts through a variety of creative mediums. Open to schools across the UK, the competition is designed to encourage participants to engage in meaningful dialogue around the issue of racism, raising awareness and spreading positivity through their artistic contributions.
This year’s competition welcomed entries in a diverse range of categories, offering students multiple creative avenues to express their thoughts and messages on tackling racism. The categories included artwork, creative writing, music, film, football boot designs and T-shirt designs, ensuring participants had the freedom to choose a medium that resonated with their skills and interests. Aahan’s entry in the T-shirt Design category stood out among a large pool of submissions, earning him the honour of Second Place.
Show Racism the Red Card was established in January 1996, following a donation by then Newcastle United goalkeeper Shaka Hislop who was suffered racially motivated abuse in the 1990s. Representatives from Show Racism the Red Card started the competition to empower young people to raise their voices against racism, stating, “each year, the entries highlight both the talent of the young participants and how their work is an inspirational way of spreading a really positive anti-racism message.”
Aahan’s success not only highlights his artistic talent but also his understanding of the important role young people can play in the fight against racism.
