On Saturday 9 November, approximately 240 students from RGS and twenty other schools participated in the annual Model United Nations (MUN) conference. Throughout the day, students debated a range of complex and controversial topics with enthusiasm and rigour. Issues such as protecting South America’s biodiversity, the ongoing warfare in Sudan, single-use plastics, and human rights violations in Chechnya were tackled with seriousness and passion. The debates reflected the values of scholarship, respect, courage and collaboration.
Preparation for the conference involved the creation of briefing guides, logistical organisation and setting up committee rooms. A bespoke website was developed for the event, providing resources and updates for participants. This addition played a key role in supporting the event’s smooth operation and was well-received.
Delegates were assigned to represent countries, advocating their positions in various committees and navigating differing viewpoints on key issues. Discussions were marked by an emphasis on critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving. The conference offered an opportunity for participants to deepen their understanding of global challenges, hone their public speaking skills, and engage with peers in meaningful dialogue.
The annual conference remains a platform for intellectual growth, encouraging participants to consider diverse perspectives and engage with the complexities of international relations.
