The past few weeks have seen pupils across various Year Groups involved in a series of enriching educational trips and workshops.
Year 1’s Guildford Adventure
Year 1 students enjoyed a fascinating trip to Guildford on Wednesday, where they immersed themselves in local history. The day began with a special talk at RGS Senior by Headmaster Dr Cox, who shared the history of the school and introduced the pupils to the extraordinary collection of books in the RGS chained library.
The journey continued with a visit to Holy Trinity Church, where the boys learned about the importance of George Abbot, a significant historical figure in Guildford. The day concluded with a trip to Abbot’s Hospital, where pupils explored more of Guildford’s rich past.
Year 2 Explores Medieval Life at Tonbridge Castle
Year 2 enjoyed an exciting and hands-on trip to Tonbridge Castle in Kent. The pupils explored the impressive structure, learning about the castle’s history and the way of life in medieval times. They particularly enjoyed a practical workshop that allowed them to immerse themselves in the past.
The workshop included dressing up in medieval costumes, constructing castle defences like bridges and arches and solving medieval puzzles. They also had the chance to try brass rubbing, a traditional craft, and fired missiles from a trebuchet! The boys had a fantastic time experiencing life in the Middle Ages.
Sir Teachalot Visits for Knights and Castles
As part of their ongoing Knights and Castles topic, Year 2 also enjoyed a visit from the legendary Sir Teachalot. The medieval expert taught the boys all about the role of knights in the past, offering insights into their training, armour and duties. The pupils took part in a jousting tournament and had the opportunity to build their own castle, although their defences were put to the test when a trebuchet obliterated their creation!
Year 4’s Magical Harry Potter Studio Tour
Year 4 had a truly magical experience when they explored the breathtaking set of the Harry Potter films. Their adventure began with a writing class, where they used real props from the films to inspire their creativity. The boys then toured the studio, where they were amazed by the behind-the-scenes secrets of how the iconic sets were created. They saw many of the most memorable pieces from the books and films, from the Great Hall to the enchanting Diagon Alley.
A Dramatic Twelfth Night Workshop
Year 6 students had the pleasure of welcoming their peers from Guildford High School for a joint drama workshop. The workshop, which focused on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, was led by the talented team from the Young Shakespeare Company. Pupils were captivated by the interactive performance, which brought the famous play to life and allowed students to explore the themes of the play while developing their dramatic skills.
