Co-curricular MFL Activities

RGS students recently embraced cultural and linguistic enrichment through two dynamic co-curricular Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) activities, showcasing the value of integrating hands-on learning with linguistic studies.

On Monday 20 January, students had the unique opportunity to explore the traditional Japanese art of Sumi-e painting under the guidance of renowned artist Mikako Nakagami. Over a 90-minute workshop, Mikako introduced students to this timeless art form, teaching them how to create stunning bamboo paintings, a classic Sumi-e motif. Her expert instruction ensured students not only grasped the technical aspects of the brushwork but also the cultural significance behind the art. The students’ final pieces were completed with the addition of authentic red “good word” stamps, a traditional mark of approval in Japanese art, enhancing their compositions with a professional and culturally significant touch. Mikako, whose work is currently exhibited at the London Art Show, left a lasting impression on students, inspiring many to further explore Japanese culture and art.

The following day, Sixth Form linguists participated in a lively multilingual, multicultural cooking competition at St. Catherine’s School. Drawing inspiration from MasterChef, students worked in mixed teams of RGS and St Catherine’s students to prepare three-course meals within a 90-minute timeframe. The twist? Recipes were written entirely in the students’ target languages. Among the dishes prepared were “Pincho de papas bravas y cebolla crujiente,” “Teufels Eier,” “Hawaii Toast,” and “Tarte Tatin.” Challenges ranged from crafting caramel for the Tarte Tatin to peeling eggs.

The dishes were judged by language assistants from both schools, and several RGS students were recognised for their culinary flair. Prize winners included Hugo T for his exceptional Tarte Tatin, Ollie S for mastering caramel, and Harrison for assisting with German recipes.

Both events reflected the dedication of the RGS to provide cultural experiences and creative opportunities beyond the classroom.
