20 Years of Friendship: Our Nepalese Partnership with Bhu Pu Sainik School

We were delighted to recently welcome four students from Bhu Pu Sainik School in Besisahar, Nepal, and their Headmaster, continuing a valued partnership that has flourished for over 20 years. For these students, the visit marked a series of exciting firsts — their first time flying, their first experience in the UK, their first Latin lesson and their first taste of life in a British school.

During their week in Guildford, split between RGS and Tormead, our Nepalese guests took part in lessons, explored the local area and immersed themselves in the school community. A highlight of their visit was a special meeting with Headmaster Dr Cox in the historic chained library, where they learned about the history of the Royal Grammar School Guildford, shared their experiences of school in Nepal and what subjects were their favourite to try.

This visit follows an important moment of collaboration earlier this year, when RGS and Tormead jointly raised £5,000 through a variety of student-led fundraising activities — including discos, cake sales and non-uniform days. The funds were donated to Bhu Pu School, which had recently developed new spaces for a library and science lab but following their completion, lacked the resources to equip them.

Thanks to the generosity of our staff, students and families, the school has now begun purchasing much-needed books and science equipment, and both new spaces are already in active use. It was wonderful to receive a heartfelt thank you message from the staff and students in Nepal, sharing their appreciation and showing how impactful the partnership continues to be.

Our long-standing connection with Bhu Pu School continues to be a powerful reminder of the value of global friendship, mutual learning and student-led action. We look forward to many more years of collaboration and cultural exchange.
