Last week’s Supporters’ Summer Reception at RGS Guildford was an evening to remember, filled with genuine gratitude and inspiring stories. This annual event serves as a special occasion to express our deepest thanks to our generous donors and to highlight the profound impact of the RGS Bursary Campaign.
One of the evening’s highlights was a moving speech by Misha Verkerk, an Old Guildfordian from the class of 2006 and former School Captain. Misha shared his personal journey and the transformative effect of receiving a bursary for the School. Now a Consultant Otologist and ENT Surgeon, Misha’s career is a testament to the power of education and opportunity. His work leading humanitarian surgery missions in Ukraine and Ethiopia exemplifies the far-reaching impact that a single bursary can have, not just on the recipient, but on communities around the world.
The reception was also a successful fundraising event, adding an impressive £2,835 to the Bursary Programme. This achievement is particularly noteworthy given that many of the attendees are already committed monthly donors. The evening’s success was further amplified by the generosity of three donors who chose to increase their regular contributions, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to supporting the next generation of RGS students.
We were especially grateful for the presence of current RGS staff members, whose participation added a special touch to the evening. Their involvement underscores the strong sense of community and continuity that defines RGS Guildford. It was heartwarming to see eleven Old Guildfordians from the past decade reconnect with familiar faces, reminiscing about their time at the School and celebrating the genuine community of which they continue to be a part.
Looking ahead, we hope to see even more staff members join us at next year’s reception. Their presence not only enriches the event but also reinforces the collective effort behind the Bursary Campaign. Together, we can continue to make a difference in the lives of deserving students, ensuring that the legacy of generosity and support at RGS Guildford endures for years to come.
