From Climbing to Volunteering: Field Day 5 in Action

On Monday, June 30, students at RGS Guildford participated in Field Day 5, engaging in a wide range of activities designed to challenge their skills, foster teamwork, and provide hands-on learning experiences. Here’s a look at some of the highlights from this exciting day.

Art in Context Students their morning painting a still life in the school studio. The focus was on observing correct proportions and mastering color mixing, providing a calm yet productive start to the day.

CCF Army The CCF Army section visited the Barossa Ranges at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Cadets had the opportunity to fire the L98 A2 Cadet General Purpose rifle on the 100m Electronic Target Range. Despite the warm weather, the cadets also enjoyed Laser Tag and Archery Tag, honing their marksmanship skills in a fun and engaging environment.

CCF RAF The RAF Section spent their day at the Brooklands aviation museum. Cadets explored static aircraft displays and engineering exhibits, testing their aircraft recognition skills and expanding their knowledge of military history.

CCF RN The RN section headed to Haslar inlet in Gosport for an introductory day of paddle boarding, kayaking, and Canadian canoeing. The cadets practiced their skills and enjoyed team-building activities, including relay races and a canoe obstacle course.

Climbing The climbing group travelled to Swanage for a day of climbing and coasteering. They tackled challenging outdoor climbs in the morning and spent the afternoon coasteering along the cliffs, jumping off rocks and navigating tunnels.

Lifesaving and Surfing The lifesaving and surfing group enjoyed perfect conditions at Mawgan Porth Beach. The students faced thrilling waves and challenging wipeouts, enhancing their surfing skills. The trip also included community engagement activities and evening games, strengthening bonds within the group.

Mountain Biking In a first for RGS Mountain Biking, an overnight trip was organized to South Wales. Tackling the trails at Cwmcarn Forest and Afan, navigating rough terrain and steep gradients, the trip included a stop off at the beach to make the most of the sunshine and surf, adding to the overall experience.

Volunteering Students dedicated their day to volunteering at local charity shops. Their efforts were greatly appreciated by the shop managers, who praised the students for their willingness to help with various tasks. Additionally, Tom and Charlie organized the “Abbot’s Olympics” at Abbot’s Hospital, providing a fun and competitive afternoon for the residents.

Other Activities included Classical and Rock Band Concert Preparation, Outdoor Pursuits and Water Sports, a visit to the National Theatre, Sports Coaching and a Cycling Challenge, raising significant funds for charity.

Our Field Day programme is an important part of our co-curricular offering at RGS Guildford. Students have the opportunity to experience a diverse range of activities that promote learning, teamwork, and personal growth. Field Day 5’s  events continue the School’s long-standing commitment to providing enriching experiences beyond the classroom for all students.
