RGS Opens Historic Old Building for Guildford Heritage Day

Guildford Heritage Day

Guildford’s annual Heritage Open Day, held each September, offers a unique opportunity for the local community to explore some of the town’s most historic landmarks.  Events included guided tours of buildings like Guildford Cathedral and Abbot’s Hospital, vintage bus rides, and displays of local history.  Among the highlights this year was the chance to step inside the Royal Grammar School’s (RGS) Old Building, an architectural treasure that has stood at the heart of Guildford for over 500 years.

The Old Building

Founded in 1509 by Robert Beckingham, a wealthy London merchant, the RGS has been a cornerstone of education in Guildford for centuries. The Tudor Old Building, still in daily use by students, is a striking example of 16th-century architecture.  Its timber-framed façade, leaded windows, and steeply pitched roof evoke the craftsmanship of the Tudor period.  Inside, original oak beams and stone fireplaces offer a glimpse into the past, while the building’s layout reflects its long-standing academic purpose.

Big School

Visitors were invited to view a special exhibition in Big School, tracing the school’s journey from its founding to its present-day role as a leading independent school.  The display featured rare photographs, archival documents, and artefacts that illustrated the school’s enduring commitment to academic excellence and its long-standing ties to the Guildford community. A particular highlight was a series of engaging talks held in the Chained Library. The talks were delivered by the Headmaster’s PA, whose knowledge and enthusiasm captivated audiences throughout the day.

Families, alumni, and history enthusiasts were among those welcomed through the doors. The event served as a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving and sharing local heritage, and the RGS was proud to contribute to this community celebration.
