Nursery Boys Embark on Eco-Schools Journey to Champion Sustainability

The nursery pupils at RGS Prep are thrilled to be taking part in the prestigious Eco-Schools programme this academic year, to continue to raise environmental awareness and action within the school community.

Eco-Schools is a nationally recognised initiative that empowers young learners to make meaningful changes in their daily lives to protect the planet. Through hands-on activities and planning with the support of their teachers, the nursery pupils will lead promoting sustainability across the school, making suggestions to older year groups about what they can do to make a difference.

To earn the coveted Eco-Schools Green Flag, the pupils will work through seven structured steps. Their journey began this week with the formation of an eco-committee, which includes all nursery pupils and teachers. During carpet time, the children were introduced to the programme with a visual display and listened attentively to Find Out About Saving Our Planet, a lift-the-flap book that explores simple, child-friendly ways to care for the environment.

The pupils have already taken on their first eco-challenges: reminding teachers to switch off classroom lights when not in use and ensuring taps are turned off after handwashing. These small but impactful actions are helping the children understand their role in conserving energy and water.

Throughout the year, nursery will engage in a variety of cross-curricular activities linked to three of the ten Eco-Schools topics. These activities will be woven into the nursery’s planning, offering fun and educational opportunities that reinforce eco-conscious habits.

Next, the pupils will participate in an environmental review of the school. This step will help identify existing green initiatives and highlight areas for improvement. With their enthusiasm and curiosity, the nursery pupils are expected to bring new ideas to this important task.

The eco-committee will continue to share updates as the programme progresses, keeping the school community informed and involved. Staff and students alike are excited to support the nursery pupils in their mission to make the school a greener, more sustainable place.

As the youngest members of the school take the lead in this inspiring initiative, their commitment to protecting the planet serves as a powerful reminder that even the smallest voices can make a big difference.
