British Science Week

British Science Week brought an exciting buzz to the school this year, and fittingly, the spotlight was handed over to our young science leaders. As the Head noted, “As it has been British Science Week I have given over the newsletter this week to three of our Year 6 Science Ambassadors! My thanks go to Mrs Dyason for putting together such a splendid celebration of all things science. Over to the pupils…”

As you might know from your children coming home with stickers, this year’s science week theme is curiosity. From Pre-prep to Prep, all boys have indulged in amazing workshops, a poster competition and whole- school science experiments. We hope you enjoy reading all about it.

Pre-Prep had an amazing week. Firstly, some STEM ambassadors from Year 6, experimenting with items inside a mystery bag, provided by Mrs Dyason visited the Pre-Prep. Items included magnifying glasses, binoculars, colour paddles, cars and magnets. Nursery experimented with floating and sinking in outdoor learning. They tested lots of objects and were excited and surprised by some of the results! Shell had a brilliant time, observing and growing eggs, keeping a daily diary to log changes and when they hatch. They have also planted sunflower seeds, learning the needs of a plant and the life cycle of a chick. For ‘Show and Share’, they researched ‘Things that come out of an egg’. KS1 made a Needle compass in outdoor learning. The magnetised a needle, by rubbing it with a magnet. They placed the needle in a bowl of water and aligned it with Earth’s magnetic field.

Prep have also taken part in many curiosity related activities. 6D performed an amazing assembly last Friday, all about science week. Year 3 have written a report about a scientist and learned about the effect of climate change on China and how they have dealt with it. Year 4 have had live lessons about “The moon and solar system” and “how to create a strong back bone”- with paper! In year 5 the boys have taken part in a talk about “What’s in your water? and found out how to be citizen scientists. Year 6 have also benefited from science week, having listened to a fascinating MET led forensic science talk and an evolution one.

Curiosity boards have been in every classroom for the whole week. This means if anyone has had a question, they have been able to write their question on a sticky note and put it on their class’s s board. You may have also seen some conversation starter stickers go home. Every day, form teachers gave boys stickers to ask at home to spark their curiosity. This ranged from “What makes you, you?”, to “Is everything made of something?”

We would like to say a huge thank you to all the teachers for their fabulous efforts in making this science week a reality- especially Mrs Dyason.
