On Monday evening, RGS Guildford proudly hosted the inaugural Junior ILA Celebration Evening, a new initiative launched this year for our Third and Fourth Form students. The Junior ILA (Independent Learning Assignment) is modelled on the long-established Senior ILA programme offered to Lower Sixth Form students. This initiative provides younger students with the opportunity to research and write a report on a topic of their own choosing, fostering independent learning and critical thinking skills.
Throughout the process, the younger students were mentored by members of the Sixth Form, ensuring they received guidance and support as they developed their projects. The culmination of their hard work was showcased and 40 students who submitted Junior ILAs, along with their mentors, presented their projects in a ‘science fair’-style event. This format allowed parents, teachers, and judges to engage with the students and learn about their research.
The evening was a celebration of creativity and intellectual curiosity. Guests enjoyed drinks and canapés while exploring the diverse range of projects on display. The judges, Director of Higher Education, Peter Dunscombe, Assistant Head (Curriculum), David Wright, and Assistant Head (Teaching and Learning), Natacha Goul-Weeker, faced the challenging task of selecting the winners from the impressive array of submissions. Their dedication and expertise were greatly appreciated, as was the fantastic support provided by the team of 21 Sixth Form students who mentored the younger participants.
The Junior ILA Celebration Evening was a resounding success, highlighting the importance of independent learning and the value of mentorship. It provided a platform for students to showcase their talents and hard work, and it reinforced the school’s commitment to fostering a culture of academic excellence and personal growth. The event not only celebrated the achievements of the students but also demonstrated the collaborative spirit that is central to the RGS Guildford community.
As we look forward to future Junior ILA events, we are excited to see how this initiative will continue to inspire and empower our students, encouraging them to pursue their passions and develop their skills in a supportive and nurturing environment.
