RGS Prep Pupils Rehearse and Perform a Play in a Week

A play from initial script to performance in just a week

Last week, RGS Prep Year 6 pupils embarked on an exhilarating challenge: to put together a full-scale production in just one week, performing Perseus and the Gorgon’s Head.  This ambitious endeavor was made possible with Teach It Through Drama practitioners, Liz Fost and Natasha Granger. The boys brought to life the captivating mythological tale of Perseus, whose journey began with a chilling prophecy that he would one day kill his grandfather, King Acrisius.  In a desperate attempt to avoid this fate, Acrisius cast Perseus and his mother, Danaë, out to sea.  Miraculously, the pair survived and landed on the island of Seriphos.  Here, Perseus was later sent on a perilous mission by King Polydectes—to retrieve the head of the fearsome Gorgon, Medusa.

Pupils performed with remarkable conviction

Despite the limited rehearsal time, the boys delivered a truly remarkable performance.  They portrayed a wide range of characters and mythical creatures with energy, confidence, and remarkable conviction.  The use of various physical theatre techniques was particularly effective, capturing the audience’s attention throughout the performance.  The boys’ enjoyment and enthusiasm for the piece were evident, making the production even more engaging.

The importance of the whole crew to a successful performance

The success of the production was a testament to the hard work and dedication of all involved.  A huge well done to all the Year 6 boys for their outstanding efforts.  Special thanks go to the backstage crew, including Mrs. Bugler, Mrs. Wright, Mr. Mills, Ms. Lucas-Haynes, and former pupil, Alex S-P, for their invaluable support throughout the week.  Their contributions were crucial in bringing this ambitious project to fruition and ensuring its success.  The entire team should be incredibly proud of what they achieved in such a short time.

A memorable end to pupils’ education at RGS Prep

The production highlighted the importance of teamwork, creativity, and resilience.  The boys not only showcased their acting talents but also learned valuable skills that will serve them well beyond this performance and the experience will undoubtedly be a wonderful memory as they come to the end of their time as an RGS Pupil and move onto their chosen senior schools.
