A Brilliant Start to the Term at RGS Prep

Despite the frequent downpours, the boys’ energy and enthusiasm have remained high, setting a positive tone for the weeks ahead.

Embracing Scholarship: More Than Just Grades

This term, RGS Prep is focusing on the value of scholarship, not simply academic achievement but a deeper commitment to learning. Scholarship at RGS Prep means asking thoughtful questions, thinking critically and developing a lifelong love of knowledge.

This was beautifully demonstrated during Friday’s assembly, where pupils engaged in a lively Q&A with the Rt Hon Sir Jeremy Hunt. Their insightful questions reflected a genuine interest in the world around them and Sir Jeremy responded with warmth and clarity, encouraging the boys to keep exploring their interests.

A Warm Welcome for New Pupils

New pupils in Years 4 to 6 were welcomed with cookies and hot chocolate during a relaxed chat with Mrs Self, Head of Wellbeing. We strive to make the transition to RGS Prep as easy and welcoming as possible so that pupils have a sense of belonging from day one. The boys are settling in well and already making their mark in classrooms and playgrounds alike.

Nursery Adventures Begin

The youngest members of the RGS Prep community have had a fantastic start. Nursery boys are quickly adapting to routines, making friends and enjoying their first experiences of school life. Highlights included their first Outdoor Learning session and a mini adventure across the road to the Prep School for PE.

During carpet time, they shared family photos and created beautiful drawings and self-portraits, helping them connect their home lives with their new school environment.

Reception: Independence and Enthusiasm

Reception pupils have shown impressive independence and enthusiasm in their first full week. From ordering Numicon pieces to practising phonics and writing their names, they’ve embraced every challenge. Most importantly, they’ve had a brilliant time building friendships and enjoying Games sessions.

Creative Learning Across the Years

In Year 1, boys created vibrant collages of Beegu, an alien character searching for her family. The task required persistence and precision, as they carefully covered their drawings with scrunched yellow tissue paper.

Year 2 explored animal classification in Science, learning the names of different offspring — from gorilla infants to goat kids. In Art, they used oil pastels to create expressive self-portraits.

Year 4 explored their understanding of the digestive system, drawing organs within body outlines.

Reading Time: A Daily Ritual

Every afternoon, pupils participate in dedicated reading sessions. These moments of quiet reflection and exploration are designed to foster a love of literature and support academic growth. Whether reading independently, in groups, or with teachers, boys engage with a wide range of texts that spark curiosity and conversation.

Looking Ahead

With such a strong start, the term promises to be full of exciting learning opportunities and personal growth. The boys have already shown that they are ready to embrace scholarship in all its forms.
