First Field Day of the Year

Our first Field Day of the year brought a variety of exciting experiences to students across all year groups, combining teamwork, creativity and personal challenge.

Art in Context: London’s Masterpieces

Lower Sixth Art students visited the National Portrait Gallery and National Gallery, exploring exhibitions including Portrait Artist 2025 and Radical Harmony. The day inspired their creative work back at school.

CCF: Tri-Service Training and Leadership

Royal Navy, Army and RAF cadets trained at Brunswick Camp with obstacle courses, drills and tactical exercises. Senior cadets led leadership tasks for younger students.

Royal Navy CCF: Sailing on the Solent

Fifth and Lower Sixth cadets sailed in Portsmouth Harbour, learning seamanship, navigation and sail handling aboard yachts and motorboats. The hands-on experience was praised as the best yet by many cadets.

Climbing

Fifth and Sixth Form climbers competed at Volume 1 in East Grinstead, tackling challenging routes and testing endurance in a friendly competition.

Drama and Technical Theatre

Drama students solved a London-based puzzle adventure, while backstage crews prepared sets for A Christmas Carol in Guildford.

Hiking: Surrey Hills Loop

Lower Sixth hikers completed an 11-mile circuit around Haslemere, including the Devil’s Punchbowl, enjoying scenic views and good company.

Mathematical Service: Teaching Preparation

Lower Sixth students prepared maths extension lessons for Year 9 visitors, practising delivery and lesson planning.

Surfing and Lifesaving in Cornwall

Sixth Form students braved strong winds to surf and learn lifesaving skills, with beginners catching their first waves.

Mountain Biking

Sixth Formers tackled trails in the Surrey Hills, enjoying technical descents and an unexpected encounter with pro rider Olly Wilkins.

Primary Maths Project

Students learned Singapore Maths Mastery methods and applied them in local primary school classrooms.

Music Scholars and Rock Band

Fifth and Sixth Form music scholars rehearsed for upcoming concerts, while the Rock Band prepared for their debut gig at The Boileroom.

Outdoor Pursuits: Survival and Mud Challenges

Fourth Formers learned fire lighting and cooking at BigHat Bushcamp, while Fifth Formers tackled a muddy assault course near Dorking.

Upper Sixth: InnerDrive Workshops
Upper Sixth students participated in workshops on metacognition and stress management to enhance study skills.

Sports Coaching and Tycoon Enterprise
Lower Sixth students trained in coaching techniques and Fifth Formers developed business ideas for the Tycoon Enterprise competition.

Volunteering
RGS volunteers engaged with the local community. A group were helping in charity shops by organising donations and setting up displays. Others helped out at two primary school clubs, meanwhile in three local residential homes RGS students ran activities for the residents.

Second Form: Bletchley Park
Second Formers explored wartime codebreaking history at Bletchley Park, engaging with interactive exhibits and puzzles.

Third Form: High Ashurst High Ropes and Team Building
The Third Form spent the day at High Ashurst in Dorking, split into 15 mixed teams to encourage new friendships and better behaviour. They rotated through high ropes and team-building activities designed to push comfort zones. The fine weather and positive attitudes made the day a great success.

Summary

Whether scaling ropes, decoding history or navigating the seas, everyone embraced new challenges for Field Day 1 with energy and determination. The day fostered collaboration, personal growth and a real sense of achievement that will set a positive tone for the year ahead. We look forward to the next one!
