Exploring Medicine, Diplomacy and Literature

Careers in Medicine Seminar
On Monday evening, the Careers in Medicine Seminar brought together an outstanding panel of speakers: Old Guildfordians Oscar Atkinson (’19), George Badham (’08), Jack Doyle (’22), and parent Carys Sonnenberg. Chaired by Mr Dunscombe (Director of Higher Education), the discussion provided honest and wide-ranging insights into studying and working in medicine. Jack Doyle spoke eloquently about his experiences, while Oscar Atkinson shared a remarkable milestone—performing his first C-section at just 24, calling it “the best moment of his life.” The seminar, attended by RGS students, parents and pupils from local schools, left aspiring medics informed and inspired.

Model United Nations Conference
The annual RGS Model United Nations (MUN) conference welcomed around 280 students from the RGS and 23 other schools. Delegates debated complex global issues with enthusiasm and rigour, tackling topics such as coral reef protection, escalation in the Sahel region, social media propaganda and systemic legal bias against women. Throughout the day, students demonstrated analytical skill and embodied the school’s values of scholarship, respect, courage, integrity, inclusivity and collaboration, reinforcing the importance of informed dialogue in addressing international challenges.

CWIZZ
Literary knowledge took centre stage as two teams of First and Second Form students represented the RGS at CWIZZ, hosted by Guildford High School and organised by CWISL (Children’s Writers and Illustrators for Stories and Literacy). Designed for Years 5–8, the quiz featured themed rounds like Extreme Machines, Little and Large, and the tricky Uncover the Cover. Between rounds, authors entertained participants with readings and spot prizes, creating an atmosphere that celebrated both competition and creativity.
