Assured Places for Candidates from RGS Prep

The Assured Place scheme is operated by RGS Guildford and provides an opportunity for pupils attending RGS Prep to secure a place at RGS Guildford during Year 5, without the requirement of sitting the formal 11+ Entrance Examinations in Year 6.  Pupils must reach and maintain a qualifying standard; the expectation is that the vast majority of Year 5 pupils are offered an Assured Place based upon their performance up to this point.

The Assured Place Process

  • The award of an Assured Place is subject to pupils reaching the required standard in regular internal assessments, administered by RGS Prep, which take place during the course of Years 2, 3, 4 and 5.  In addition to these results, references are submitted for review by the Admissions Committee, including the Headmaster from RGS Guildford, as well as the Head from RGS Prep.  On the basis of this data, Assured Places are confirmed.
  • Pupils at RGS Prep who have not gained an Assured Place by the end of Year 5 still have the opportunity to sit RGS Guildford’s 11+ Entrance Examinations in Year 6; structured support and guidance will be provided by RGS Prep.
  • Pupils joining RGS Prep in Year 5 may be offered an Assured Place or may be asked to sit the 11+ Entrance Examinations, depending upon their academic levels.  Those joining in Year 6 are, however, expected to sit the 11+ Entrance Examinations.
  • If a pupil does not maintain a suitable level of effort, attainment and behaviour over a prolonged period, at any time following the offer of an Assured Place, the Head of RGS Prep may recommend to the Headmaster of RGS Guildford that the place be withdrawn.
  • No registration fee is required for transition between RGS Prep and RGS Guildford.

Scholarships

  • Pupils may be nominated by RGS Prep to sit the RGS Guildford 11+ Academic Scholarship in Year 6, based upon their academic performance to date, alongside candidates from other schools.  This takes place in the January of Year 6.
  • Pupils who would like to apply for the RGS Guildford 11+ Art, Drama, Music or Sports Scholarships are able to apply directly to RGS Guildford in Year 6, alongside candidates from other schools.  For further details about scholarships click here.

Bursaries

  • Families interested in applying for financial support – or maintaining a current bursary – are considered by RGS Guildford in the usual manner.  The website provides detailed information on the provision for financial support.

 Acceptance

  • Year 2, 3, 4 and 5 internal assessments take place annually throughout the year.  Discussions with parents take place in January of Year 5 after which an Assured Place may be offered.  A letter is sent to parents following this award; this place has to be formally accepted, with the contract signed and the balance of the acceptance deposit paid, by mid-March of Year 5.
  • The balance of the acceptance deposit will be calculated as the difference between the RGS Guildford acceptance deposit and the deposit paid by RGS parents when their child joined RGS Prep.

Candidates from other schools

  • Approximately two-thirds of the total number of places in Year 7 are traditionally offered to students from other schools.  RGS Guildford prides itself on being a local school which has always welcomed students from a wide range of State Primary and Prep Schools throughout Surrey and beyond.  We remain committed to our founding mission to provide exceptional education for bright students from all sections of our community.
  • In the absence of consistent annual data from other schools, candidates from other schools are required to sit the RGS Guildford 11+ Entrance Examinations in November of Year 6.  The deadline for registration is mid-October of Year 6.  Successful candidates are informed in mid-February in line with the Trinity Group Schools (a group of independent schools with agreed admissions dates).
