This summer, cadets from the Royal Grammar School Guildford Combined Cadet Force took part in the HQ South West CCF Central Camp, held at Okehampton on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. The week-long camp brought together cadets from schools across the South West for a challenging and rewarding experience filled with training, competition and camaraderie.
Fieldcraft and Tactical Training on Dartmoor
The camp commenced with a demanding 24-hour co-curricular field training exercise on Dartmoor’s rugged terrain. Cadets honed their fieldcraft and tactical skills, learning to navigate and operate in challenging conditions. The exercise culminated in a dramatic dawn assault on a simulated enemy farm complex, allowing cadets to apply their newly acquired skills in a realistic and memorable scenario.
Camp-Based Activities and Unexpected Twists
Following the field exercise, cadets enjoyed a day of camp-based activities designed to build practical skills and teamwork. These included clay target shooting, archery, paintball, first aid, and command tasks. Although a day was scheduled at Tregantle Range in Cornwall for live firing, sea fog reduced visibility to just 200 metres, forcing a change of plans. Mr Yetman swiftly organised an Escape Room challenge back in Okehampton, which proved to be a popular and engaging alternative.
Final Day Competitions
The final day saw cadets from all participating schools compete in a series of challenges, including drill, air rifle shooting and elements from the activity day. The RGS team excelled, securing first place in the command and leadership task.
The camp was a resounding success, offering cadets valuable skills, unforgettable experiences and the chance to forge lasting friendships.
