In recent weeks, RGS Guildford’s sports teams have delivered a series of thrilling performances across multiple disciplines, from hockey and football to shooting and skiing.
Hockey Highlights
RGS’s hockey teams have been particularly impressive, with several exciting Cup matches and fixtures against rival schools. The Under 14As faced off against Ardingly College in a tense Cup match. Despite dominating much of the game, the first half ended goalless, and the match was eventually decided in a shootout. Goalkeeper Josh Horsnell played a pivotal role, making crucial saves to secure a sudden-death victory and earning Man of the Match honours.
The Under 16As had a strong performance against Magdalen College School, with RGS emerging victorious 4 – 1. An early 2 – 0 lead was followed by a strong second half, despite MCS pulling one back at 2 – 1. The Under 15A team also had an impressive win against Reigate Grammar, with Oliver Pickup scoring a hat-trick in a 3 – 0 victory.
The Under 14Bs triumphed 4 – 0 against KCS Wimbledon, with Jack Jamieson scoring a brilliant hat-trick, while the Under 14Ds had a free-flowing, attacking performance against the same opponent, securing a comfortable 4 – 0 win.
At the Under 13 level, all teams delivered excellent performances. The Under 13As won a thrilling 3 – 2 match, while the Under 13Bs drew 3 – 3 in a goal-packed game. The Under 13Cs won 2 – 1, and the Under 13Ds enjoyed a dominant 9 – 1 victory with a hat-trick from Ben Vickers.
Football Fixtures
The RGS football teams have also been busy, with midweek fixtures against Dunottar School. The 1st XI secured a 2 – 1 win, thanks to goals from Sam Carney and Eddie Banks. The 2nd XI triumphed 4 – 0, while the 3rd XI had a thrilling 3 – 3 draw after coming back from a 1 – 3 deficit. The 4th XI and 5th XI also performed admirably, with both teams securing positive results.
In the London and South East Cup, the 1st XI was narrowly defeated by Reigate Grammar, losing 0 – 2, but the 2nd XI put up a strong fight, drawing 2 – 2 before losing on penalties.
Shooting Success
RGS’s shooting team travelled to Cambridge to compete against undergraduates, postgraduates and Old Guildfordian, Ben Vary. Despite challenging timed conditions, the team delivered a remarkable performance, with James Nicholas securing the top score. Ayaan Bhagat also impressed, scoring a perfect 100 on his second card. In the main competition, RGS claimed victory with a score of 1530, narrowly defeating Cambridge by 28 points.
Skiing Achievement
Finally, nine RGS skiers participated in the British Schoolboys’ International Race Championships in Switzerland. Despite challenging conditions, including new deep snow that led to the cancellation of the slalom, the team showcased excellent skill and resilience. Congratulations to Elliott Schafer, who placed 3rd in the U14 unregistered racer category.
