RGS Guildford’s Annual Careers Convention: A Resounding Success

On 25 April, RGS Guildford hosted its Annual Careers Convention, marking a triumphant and full return after the hiatus of the ‘Covid Years’. This year, the event was re-established at a new time of the year, inviting a fresh generation of advisors to guide and inspire students.  The convention featured 100 advisors, including 65 Old Guildfordians (OGs), representing a diverse array of career paths from Law to Engineering, Medicine to Government, Finance to the creative arts, and more.  In total, 25 career sectors were showcased, providing students with a comprehensive overview of potential career opportunities.

The event was open to all RGS students and extended to 12 other local schools from both the maintained and independent sectors.  Although an official count of attendees was not kept, it is estimated that well over 350 students and parents participated during the two-hour event. The strong turnout was a testament to the high level of interest and the value of the convention. Observing the queue of attendees stretching out onto the High Street from the Great Hall at 6.30pm was a clear indication of the event’s importance and relevance to the students.

The Seminar Room, transformed into the Engineering room for the evening, was particularly popular. However, the advisor from Netflix, who had recently been involved in commissioning ‘Adolescence’ amongst other things, attracted the largest crowd, highlighting the students’ keen interest in the creative arts and media industry.

Feedback from the advisors was overwhelmingly positive. They praised the students for their engagement, enthusiasm, and confidence. The advisors noted that the students had clearly prepared in advance, having reviewed the list of advisors and their biographies, and came equipped with thoughtful questions.

The Annual Careers Convention at RGS Guildford was a resounding success, providing invaluable insights and inspiration to students as they consider their future career paths. The event not only re-established a vital tradition but also demonstrated the school’s commitment to supporting students in their journey towards professional success.
