The RGS Annual Careers Convention once again proved to be a tremendous success, attracting more than 300 students from both the Royal Grammar School and a number of local schools. The event brought together professionals representing a wide range of careers and industries, providing students with a valuable opportunity to explore future pathways, seek advice and gain insights from experienced practitioners.
The enthusiasm for the event was evident throughout the evening, with a steady flow of students engaging in conversations with advisors well beyond the official closing time of 8.30pm. Feedback from those attending as advisors was overwhelmingly positive, with many commenting on the high level of engagement demonstrated by the students. Advisors were particularly impressed by the thoughtful and insightful questions they were asked, as well as the clear evidence that many students had researched potential careers in advance and arrived with a strong sense of purpose. It was clear that students had carefully identified the individuals they wanted to speak to and the information they hoped to gain from the experience.
One of the most distinctive features of the Careers Convention is the strong support it receives from the Old Guildfordian community. The vast majority of advisors were former RGS students, with particularly strong representation from those who have left the School within the last decade. Their willingness to return and share their experiences helps to make the event especially meaningful for current students, offering relatable and relevant insights into university choices, career development and professional life.
For a number of advisors, the convention marked their first visit back to RGS since leaving school. The evening therefore served not only as a valuable careers event but also as an opportunity for former students and staff to reconnect and reflect on their shared experiences. Staff members supporting the event greatly enjoyed catching up with former pupils and hearing about the diverse paths their careers have taken.
Events of this scale rely on the dedication and support of many individuals working behind the scenes. Particular thanks go to the Estates team for the considerable time and effort spent preparing and later clearing the Great Hall, Auditorium and Seminar Room. The newly appointed Senior Prefect team also played a vital role throughout the evening, welcoming advisors, students and parents, helping visitors navigate the event and ensuring proceedings ran smoothly.
Gratitude is also extended to Kathryn Sweet, Philippa Green, Helen Dixon, Natacha Goul-Wheeker, Jimmy Pressley, David Wright, Roger Meadowcroft and Wai-Shun Lau for their invaluable support on the evening, as well as to the Catering team for their contribution to the event’s success.
Special recognition must also go to Gerry Newman, whose commitment, organisation and attention to detail were instrumental in delivering such a successful event. Her seemingly inexhaustible energy, unwavering enthusiasm and meticulous planning ensured that every aspect of the Careers Convention ran smoothly and provided a rewarding experience for all involved.
The Annual Careers Convention continues to play an important role in helping students explore future opportunities, build professional connections and make informed decisions about their next steps. Thanks to the generosity of the advisors and the efforts of everyone involved, this year’s event was another memorable and inspiring success.
