It was a privilege to hear the astonishing array of talented musicians perform in our annual Concerto Concert with Southern Pro Musica in Holy Trinity Church. The repertoire, performed by 11 of our most outstanding soloists and singers, was wide-ranging and demanding, included a complete performance of the Kabalevsky Violin Concerto played by Robin Moggs and Henry Mankabady with wonderful vigour and style.
Our singers were also out in force, with Ralph M, Alex P, Adrian G and Orlando M bringing incredible maturity and communication to their performances, which were received with great enthusiasm by the audience. There was also a heart-breaking performance of Bredon H by Vaughan Williams given by Oscar F. It was such an accomplished and touching interpretation that everyone felt unwilling to break the atmosphere by applauding at the end and was a hard act to follow.
Three of our pianists, Nicholas Y, Julian Zand Joseph R, performed the first movements of their chosen concertos. All three were outstanding; Nicholas opened the concert with an authoritative and deeply musical account of Beethoven 3, Julian was completely immersed in the excitement and energy of Shostakovich 2 and Joseph brought the concert to finish, playing Rachmaninov 3, which is considered the most monumental and challenging of his concertos that most professional pianists would think twice about attempting. It says an enormous amount about his talent, determination and musical intellect that he played it so beautifully.
The level of playing was inspiring and we as a department are truly proud of what the boys were able to achieve, and we say a fond farewell to many of the performers. They will be missed!
