As always, the final term of the academic year saw a wonderful array of Old Guildfordian events, bringing together former students from across the generations to reconnect with one another and with the School. These occasions continue to highlight the strength of the RGS community and the enduring affection that Old Guildfordians have for the RGS.
One of the highlights of the term was the return of the Classes of 1971 and 1972, who enjoyed another memorable reunion at the RGS. Remarkably, this was their fourth reunion at the School in just five years, a testament both to their enthusiasm and to the strong friendships that have endured for more than five decades. The group are among the School’s most loyal and generous supporters and clearly relish every opportunity to return. Their day was packed with activities, including drinks, lunch, sport at Bradstone Brook, a lively pub quiz and a dinner in town later in the evening. Energy levels remained impressively high throughout the day, with good humour and conversation in plentiful supply. Such was the success of the event that plans are already underway for their next gathering in 2027.
The end of June brought glorious weather and provided the perfect setting for two cricket matches at Bradstone Brook, the School’s impressive 20-acre sports ground. Both fixtures featured Old Guildfordians and were played in an excellent spirit, with enjoyment, camaraderie and a shared love of cricket very much in evidence. The headline match saw the Headmaster’s XI take on an Old Guildfordian XI captained by Alex Sweet. Batting first, the OG side posted a competitive total of 192 for 8 from their 30 overs. Following a delicious lunch enjoyed by players and spectators alike, the Headmaster’s XI mounted a spirited chase but ultimately fell short, finishing on 180 all out. One of the standout moments of the day came when Dr Cox delighted everyone present by taking a wicket with the very first ball he bowled. The match attracted strong support from staff, families and former students, helping to create a wonderful atmosphere throughout the afternoon.

The term concluded with the annual Old Guildfordian Undergraduate and Staff Drinks event. A number of OGs from the Classes of 2022 to 2025 joined current staff at The Rat’s Castle for an informal evening of drinks and conversation. The gathering provided an excellent opportunity for recent leavers to share news of university life, placements, travel and future plans, while also hearing updates from the School. Events such as these help to maintain the close relationship between the RGS and its alumni, ensuring that former students remain connected long after they leave.
Taken together, these events demonstrated once again the strength, generosity and spirit of the Old Guildfordian community. Whether celebrating decades-long friendships, enjoying a day of cricket, supporting the Bursary Fund or catching up with former teachers, Old Guildfordians continue to play an important role in the life of the School, and we look forward to welcoming many more back in the years ahead.
