The 11+ can feel like a big moment for families across Surrey. With the right preparation, and the right perspective, it need not be stressful. Our teachers share their advice.
What the 11+ involves
Assessments vary between schools. For our 11+ assessments we use the online ISEB Common Pre-Tests during the first term of Year 6. These are age-standardised tests comprising English, Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning and a short composition/English creative writing task.
There is also a relaxed, individual interview with a member of staff and a teamwork task which provide an opportunity to see students in a more normal classroom setting.

Start early, but keep it light
At RGS Guildford we don’t recommend tutoring or focused prep for the 11+. The assessments are designed to test potential and follow closely what your son or daughter have been learning in Year 5. It is often felt that tutoring simply adds to the pressure. Speak to your child’s current headteacher and if they recommend that the RGS is a good fit for your child. Generally speaking, like homework, little and often works far better than last minute cramming. Wide reading, curiosity and everyday problem solving build the skills that matter most.
Focus on foundations, not tricks
Strong reading comprehension, reasoning and number confidence carry a child a long way. Aim to build genuine understanding rather than drilling question types.
Look after wellbeing
Sleep, downtime and plenty of reassurance matter. Remind your child that the school simply wants to see them at their happy, natural best.
