Over the first four Saturdays of term, 170 Year 6 pupils from 28 local primary schools came together at RGS Guildford for our 2026 Masterclasses programme. Families joined us for the celebration events at the end of the course, where pupils shared their learning and showcased the skills, knowledge and confidence they had developed across seven strands: Classical World, Creative Arts, Humanities, Languages, Mathematics, Science and Technology.

The Masterclasses are one of RGS Guildford’s flagship outreach initiatives and form an important part of the West Surrey Partnership events programme. More importantly, they provide young learners with the opportunity to explore subjects in greater depth, challenge themselves in new ways and work alongside like-minded peers from schools across the region.
Exploring new ideas
Across the four weeks, pupils immersed themselves in a wide range of hands-on activities, investigations and creative challenges. Whether deciphering clues from the ancient world, tackling complex mathematical problems, conducting scientific experiments, developing language skills or exploring artistic techniques, participants demonstrated enthusiasm, imagination and a genuine appetite for learning. The programme encouraged them to think independently, ask questions and embrace new ideas, often taking them beyond the boundaries of their usual classroom experience.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the Masterclasses is seeing the confidence that pupils develop over the course of the programme. As the weeks progressed, participants grew increasingly willing to share their ideas, collaborate with others and present their findings. The final celebration event provided an opportunity for pupils to reflect on their achievements and take pride in what they had accomplished, while also sharing their experiences with their family.

The success of the Masterclasses is measured not simply by attendance, but by the excitement, curiosity and sense of achievement shown by the pupils themselves. Over four memorable Saturdays, these young learners embraced new challenges, discovered new interests and formed connections with fellow pupils from across the local area. The energy, creativity and enjoyment by pupils and staff alike made the 2026 Masterclasses an inspiring and memorable experience.
