Our Easter 2025 Classics trip to Italy was a rich blend of history, culture, and pizza. Merely hours after the final assembly, fifty-eight boys—accompanied by seven members of staff—arrived at Gatwick for a bracing 4.00am meet. After disembarking in a soggy Naples, we began our journey through ancient sites, starting with the beautifully preserved Villa Poppaea at Oplontis.
Day 1: Arrival and Villa Poppaea
The first day set the tone for our adventure. Despite the rain, the boys were eager to explore the Villa Poppaea at Oplontis. This ancient Roman villa, believed to have belonged to Emperor Nero’s second wife, Poppaea Sabina, offered a fascinating glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the Roman elite. The well-preserved frescoes and architecture captivated everyone, providing a perfect introduction to our classical journey.
Day 2: Vesuvius and Herculaneum
The second day was marked by an awe-inspiring hike up Mount Vesuvius. The boys were thrilled to stand at the edge of the crater, imagining the catastrophic eruption that buried Pompeii and Herculaneum in AD 79. The visit to Herculaneum that followed brought the pieces studied in the classroom to life vividly. The virtual reality museum at Herculaneum, with its nostalgic charm of a 90s 3D movie, added a unique twist to our historical exploration.
Day 3: Pompeii and Naples
Our third day took us to Pompeii, where the boys wandered through the ancient streets, exploring the ruins of homes, shops, and public buildings. The archaeological museum in Naples further immersed us in the world of the Romans, showcasing artifacts that painted a compelling picture of daily life in ancient times. The tour of the Naples underground complex offered a fascinating glimpse into the city’s layered past, revealing its rich history beneath the bustling modern streets.
Day 4: Sorrento and Pizza-Making
In Sorrento, the boys participated in a lively pizza-making session that took an unexpected twist with an exuberant Tarantella performance mid-dough toss. This lively Italian folk dance added a burst of energy and fun to the evening, making it a memorable experience for everyone.
Day 5: Isle of Capri and Villa Jovis
Our visit to the Isle of Capri provided a moment of serenity and sunshine. The boys enjoyed the breathtaking views and the tranquil atmosphere of the island. At the Villa Jovis, they listened to an engaging talk on Emperor Tiberius and his infamous deeds, adding a touch of intrigue to our historical journey.
Throughout the trip, the students not only gained a deeper understanding of classical history but also developed a greater appreciation for Italian culture. The teachers were proud of the boys’ enthusiasm and curiosity, which made the trip a resounding success.
