Senior (ages 11 – 18)

Thank you for your interest in the RGS.  We very much look forward to welcoming you through our doors to experience what makes the RGS such a vibrant, welcoming and inspiring environment.

From September 2027 the RGS will become co-educational, welcoming girls alongside boys into our school in Year 12.  In September 2028 we will welcome our first intake of girls to Year 7. The transition will then progress organically through the year groups.  If you’d like to know more about our move to co-education please take a look at our brochure.

Information about our admissions process can be found below. For questions or queries about any aspect of the admissions process please contact Admissions on 01483 880 600 or by email at RGS-Admissions@rgsg.co.uk.

This information is for pupils joining the Senior School. For information about joining the Sixth Form click here.

Our Senior Admissions Process

1. Registration

All students must be registered to sit our entrance examination. Please complete the form here along with payment of the non-refundable registration fee.

Registration deadlines apply for each academic year.

If your child is currently in Year 7 or 8 please contact the Head of Admissions, Mrs Kathryn Sweet, on 01483 880 600 or by email at RGS-admissions@rgsg.co.uk before registering them.

2. Assessment

Our main entry points are:

  • 11+ (Year 7)
  • 16+ (Year 12) – Admissions process and key dates for 16+ entry
  • Occasional places available in Years 8, 9 and 10.
  • Candidates who have been either successful or unsuccessful in their 11+ application to the RGS may re-apply no earlier than entry into Year 10 (with assessment in Year 9) or subsequent years.
  • A wait list is available for all year groups (except Fifth Form – Year 11 and Upper Sixth Form – Year 13).
  • In exceptional circumstances (such as current school closure) and on an individual basis, we may be able to consider intake into Years 11 and 13.

The assessments for 11+ include:

  • A confidential reference from their current headteacher.
  • The online ISEB Common Pre-Tests during the first term of Year 6. Age-standardised tests comprise English, Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning; they are in a multiple-choice format and take approximately two-and-a-quarter hours to complete. No special preparation is required for the Common Pre-Tests.
  • An individual interview by current members of staff. These are conducted in a relaxed atmosphere to gain insight into each students’ interests and to see how they respond to questions they will not have prepared for.
  • A short composition/English creative writing task.
  • A teamwork task where students tackle a series of challenges which rely on teamwork and collaboration, providing an opportunity to see students in a more normal classroom setting.

  • We invite some students back in January for a second interview; this allows us to give all the benefit of doubt.  The interview provides opportunity to reflect on inconsistency in performance; relative weakness in one area; disparity between performance in the assessments and their reference.  This allows us to identify those with the potential to thrive at the RGS but who have not performed consistently in the assessment.

3. Offers

Parents are notified of the outcome towards the middle of February, on a date agreed by all schools which are a member of the Trinity Group. Acceptances are required by early March.

4. What happens next?

If your child is offered a place, you will be invited to our Offer Holders’ Event in February. This allows parents and children to meet more of the staff body and current students and ask any outstanding questions. For those who accept their places, they are invited to our New Students’ Reception Afternoon.

Special Educational Needs

The RGS adopts an inclusive policy and students with Special Educational Needs are offered the opportunity to join the School if they satisfy the School’s selection procedures.  Parents may be asked to contribute to any special resources.  Students with Special Educational Needs will have access to the whole school curriculum and be fully integrated into the School.  Exceptional circumstances, which may affect such access, will be dealt with on an individual basis in consultation with the Head of Learning Support, Head of Year, Deputy Heads, parents and the student themselves.
