Sixth Form (ages 16 – 18)

Thank you for your interest in the RGS.  We very much look forward to welcoming you through our doors to experience what makes the RGS such a vibrant, welcoming and inspiring environment.

From September 2027 the RGS will become co-educational, welcoming girls alongside boys into our school in Year 12.  In September 2028 we will welcome our first intake of girls to Year 7. The transition will then progress organically through the year groups. If you’d like to know more about our move to co-education please take a look at our brochure.

We are delighted that you are considering our Sixth Form for your son or daughter. We welcome applications from those wishing to join the Sixth Form and encourage you to attend our Sixth Form Information Event in the September when students are in the Fifth Form (Year 11).

The initial assessment to our Sixth Form is via:

  • a personal statement;
  • Headteacher’s report including GCSE predictions;
  • online aptitude tests.

Based on a careful review of these elements, successful applicants will be invited back for:

  • academic interviews by subject specialists based on their provisional A Level option choices;
  • a general interview with one of the Heads of Sixth Form and a member of the Senior Management Team.

Offers of places are conditional upon specified grades to be achieved at GCSE. Candidates are expected to gain a grade 7 – 9 at GCSE in each subject to be studied at A Level, plus a strong list of other academic GCSEs, with at least six grades 7 – 9 including English and Mathematics.  Candidates also need to demonstrate at the interview that they can study at an advanced level and can work independently. Entrants to the Sixth Form are encouraged to take full advantage of our extensive co-curricular programme.

In exceptional circumstances (such as current school closure) and on an individual basis we may be able to consider intake into Year 13.

Our Sixth Form Admissions Process

1. Registration

Admission to the RGS Sixth Form for September 2027 is subject to the availability of places and academic criteria.  To be considered for a place, please complete our online registration form and pay the non-returnable registration fee.

Candidates will need to complete the A Level Choices Form in early October providing details of their choice of A levels, passions and interests. They will also be asked to write a personal statement outlining their reasons for applying to RGS along with their university and career aspirations and how they will contribute to the wider RGS community.

At the same time, a confidential report including predicted GCSE grades will be requested from the candidate’s current school.

2. Assessment

Candidates in Year 11 will be invited to the RGS in October to attend a half day of online aptitude tests in verbal, non-verbal, quantitative and spatial reasoning.

Based on a review of these assessments alongside the submitted personal statement and reference from their current school, successful applicants will be invited back in mid-November for interview by subject specialists based on their provisional A Level option choices (recognising that they may not have reached a final decision at this stage).  Candidates will also receive a general interview with one of the Heads of Sixth Form and a member of the Senior Management Team.

Candidates from outside the British education system who are not able to take GCSEs will need to demonstrate that they have sufficient knowledge of their chosen subjects to be able to follow the courses provided in the RGS Sixth Form and may be asked to take examinations in the appropriate subjects.

3. Results

If a candidate is considered suitable and has already met the academic criteria, the Headmaster may offer an unconditional place.  If, as is more likely, the candidate has not yet taken GCSEs, they may be offered a conditional offer to be confirmed when results are published in August.
