A Musical Collaboration in Spain

From 9 – 14 July, the RGS Big Band joined forces with ensembles from Guildford High School for a vibrant concert tour across Barcelona and the Costa Dorada. The combined group of fifty-four talented musicians—equally split between the two schools—delivered an eclectic programme featuring jazz classics, rock and pop favourites and iconic film and show themes.

Stunning Venues and Enthusiastic Audiences

The tour featured four memorable performances at some of the region’s most picturesque and culturally rich venues. These included the serene courtyard of the Seminary Cloisters in central Barcelona, the lively waterfront bandstand at Calafell beach resort, and the charming town square of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia—renowned for its cava production and nestled in the hills above the city.

Each concert drew large, appreciative crowds, with enthusiastic applause and cheers echoing through the venues. Local organisers and officials were so impressed by the musical calibre that they extended immediate invitations for a return visit. Audience members lingered after performances to share their admiration and curiosity, with many assuming the ensemble was from a specialist music conservatoire.

Turning Setbacks into Magic

Although one concert was cancelled due to a sudden rainstorm and localised flooding, the group quickly adapted. A spontaneous performance was arranged at the hotel, which turned out to be one of the most heartwarming moments of the tour. Guests danced joyfully, evoking a sense of nostalgia and romance that made the evening truly unforgettable.

Beyond the Music

The tour wasn’t solely about performing. Students also explored cultural landmarks such as the Picasso Museum, Sagrada Família, the Gothic Quarter, Roman ruins in Tarragona, and the breathtaking Montserrat Monastery. Leisure time by the hotel pool offered a chance to relax and bond.

Reunion Performance

To celebrate the tour’s success, a Reunion Concert will be held at Guildford High School on Friday 12 September at 7.00pm.
