of the RGS Music Department were delighted to attend the premiere of Peter White’s extraordinary new opera, Rosalind, on Tuesday evening. This remarkable work tells the story of scientist Rosalind Franklin and her PhD student Raymond Gosling, whose pioneering X-ray diffraction image of DNA provided crucial evidence in understanding its double-helix structure. Although Franklin’s contribution was fundamental to one of the most significant scientific discoveries of the twentieth century, her achievements were not fully recognised during her lifetime, with the honours famously awarded to Watson and Crick. The significance of the occasion was heightened by the location of the premiere, which took place in the chapel at King’s College London, adjacent to the laboratories where Franklin carried out her groundbreaking research.
Supported by the outstanding London Mozart Players, the cast delivered Peter White’s carefully crafted libretto with exceptional clarity and vocal excellence. The opera’s colourful orchestration and skilful vocal writing enhanced the drama throughout, bringing Franklin’s story vividly and compellingly to life. Audience members were clearly captivated by every aspect of the production, from the music and libretto to the performances of the singers and musicians, as well as the beauty of the staging and set design.
Rosalind has been many years in the making and represents a true labour of love for Peter White. Beyond the countless hours devoted to composing the opera itself, the determination and perseverance required to secure funding and coordinate the extensive promotion necessary to bring such an ambitious project to the stage should not be underestimated. The successful premiere was a testament not only to Peter’s musical talent but also to his vision, commitment and resilience.
The result is a work of exceptional quality that offers a moving and powerful tribute to Rosalind Franklin’s legacy. Everyone who attended the premiere witnessed something truly special, and Peter should be immensely proud of creating an opera that so effectively combines artistic excellence with an important historical story. It was a memorable and inspiring evening, and a fitting celebration of years of dedication and hard work.
