The spirit of community, compassion and resilience was on full display as 65 Second Form students, supported by eight members of staff and four Lower Sixth helpers, took part in the School’s fifth annual Sleep Out in support of the local homelessness charity, Transform.

Throughout the evening, the Second Form students demonstrated enthusiasm, maturity and a genuine commitment to the purpose behind the event. They were excellent ambassadors for the School, following instructions carefully and embracing both the practical and reflective aspects of the experience. While the Sleep Out cannot replicate the realities of homelessness, it provides students with an opportunity to gain a greater appreciation of the difficulties many people face and the importance of supporting organisations that work to address these issues.
The evening featured a variety of activities designed to build teamwork and create a memorable experience. Before settling down for the night, students enjoyed pizza and garlic bread before taking part in a range of activities, including sports, a scavenger hunt and a large-scale game of Cluedo. These activities helped foster a strong sense of camaraderie among participants and ensured there was plenty of fun alongside the fundraising effort.
As darkness fell, both School quads were transformed into temporary campsites filled with tents and cardboard shelters. Despite the unusual sleeping arrangements, students settled quickly and most managed to enjoy a reasonable night’s sleep under the stars.
The following morning provided a striking contrast to the previous evening. It was hard to believe that just hours earlier the quads had been filled with tents, boxes and sleeping bags. After enjoying a continental breakfast, students worked together efficiently to dismantle camps, clear equipment and restore the site. Their collaborative approach resulted in a remarkably swift and effective clean-up operation.
The event has once again demonstrated the generosity, energy and community spirit of the whole RGS community. with the total reaching more than £10,500, making this the most successful Sleep Out to date. Every contribution will support Transform’s vital work helping people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity within the local area.
Congratulations and thanks go to all the students, staff, Lower Sixth helpers and supporters who contributed to another hugely successful Sleep Out. Their efforts have not only raised a significant sum for charity but have also highlighted the importance of compassion, service and social responsibility, values that remain at the heart of the RGS.
