The final of this year’s 200 Seconds Competition took place in May, bringing together some of the School’s most talented young presenters for an evening of intellectual curiosity, creativity and confident public speaking. An established and much-valued part of the Scholarship for All programme, the competition provides students in the First and Second Forms with the opportunity to explore a topic of their choice and present their findings to an audience, all within a strict time limit of just 200 seconds.
The challenge encourages students to develop skills that extend far beyond the classroom. Participants are required to research a subject in depth, organise their ideas effectively and deliver a clear, engaging presentation within a highly disciplined format. The result is an event that celebrates not only academic interest but also the ability to communicate complex ideas with confidence and clarity.
This year’s theme, “Journeys”, inspired a remarkable range of presentations. Students approached the topic from a variety of perspectives, demonstrating both imagination and intellectual ambition. Subjects explored included the life and leadership of Winston Churchill, the extraordinary athletic achievements of British ultramarathon runner Jasmin Paris, and a number of other fascinating personal, historical and geographical journeys. The breadth of topics reflected the diverse interests of the students and highlighted the creativity that lies at the heart of the competition.
Following a series of preliminary rounds, four exceptional finalists earned their place in the concluding event. Each finalist delivered a presentation of impressive quality, speaking with a level of maturity, confidence and poise that belied their age.
The audience was captivated throughout the evening as the finalists demonstrated not only a thorough understanding of their chosen subjects but also an ability to engage listeners through compelling storytelling and thoughtful insights. Their passion for their topics, combined with excellent presentation skills, made for a highly enjoyable and memorable occasion.
The standard of the final was exceptionally high, leaving the judging panel with the difficult task of selecting an overall winner. With all four finalists producing presentations of outstanding quality, the decision was far from straightforward. The winner will be announced during the first whole-school assembly after half term, where the achievements of all finalists will be recognised and celebrated.
The competition continues to strengthen links with RGSG Dubai, which runs its own version of the event as part of the schools’ shared commitment to academic enrichment and student scholarship. Unfortunately, RGSG Dubai students were unable to travel to the UK this year, meaning that the planned joint in-person Grand Final could not take place. Despite this disappointment, recordings of the finals from both schools were exchanged and shared, allowing students to appreciate and learn from each other’s presentations.
Congratulations go to all participants who took part in this year’s competition. Their enthusiasm, dedication and willingness to challenge themselves exemplify the spirit of Scholarship for All and demonstrate the importance of nurturing curiosity, confidence and a love of learning.
