Mr MF Baggs

Having returned to the RGS in 2022, Matt is now in his fourth year of his role as Head of Lower School, having been Director of Sport at King’s College School, Wimbledon and Caterham School. In both of these schools, he held the position of Director of Sport, overseeing both the girls and boys sport programmes. Prior to that, Matt ran the hockey programme here at RGS from 2010 to 2016, as well as holding the positions of Deputy Head of House and Head of Lower Sixth, Deputy Head of Sixth Form. Matt brings a breadth of knowledge from his experience in different schools across Surrey, allied to his depth of understanding of the RGS and its core values.

Matt is passionate about using education to develop character, individuality and seeks to create an environment where every student matters. He firmly believes that happy students make successful students and works with the extensive pastoral team to ensure that each and every student is supported in the way that works for them to allow them to thrive. Having been on more than 50 school residential trips in his career, he is a firm believer in a broad and varied co-curricular provision being a core part of an outstanding education.

Outside of work, Matt is an avid sports fan, keen cook and enthusiastic traveller, though most of his time outside of work is now spent enjoying the company of his two daughters whilst transporting them from one activity to the next! Matt also has much to thank the RGS for, having met his wife on the staff in his first stint at the School.
