Sixth Form Admissions Process

RGS welcomes applications from boys wishing to join the Sixth Form and we are pleased to meet and discuss opportunities with boys during their Fifth Form (Year 11).

Entry to the Sixth Form is via a personal statement, Headteacher’s report including mock GCSE predictions, online aptitude tests and a series of academic interviews.

Offers of places are conditional upon specified grades to be achieved at GCSE. Candidates are expected to gain a grade 7 – 9 at GCSE in each subject to be studied at A Level, plus a strong list of other academic GCSEs, with at least six grades 7 – 9 including English and Mathematics.  Candidates also need to demonstrate at the interview that they are capable conceptually of studying the subject at an advanced level and that they have the appropriate work ethic to be able to work independently, consistently and industriously at a demanding academic level. Entrants to the Sixth Form are also expected to contribute fully to the School’s co-curricular programme.

In exceptional circumstances (such as current school closure) and on an individual basis we may be able to consider intake into Year 13.

A high level of fluency in both written and spoken English is required as all subjects are taught in English and no teaching or support in English as a Foreign Language is offered.

REGISTRATION

Admission to the RGS Sixth Form for September 2025 is subject to the availability of places and academic criteria.  To be considered for a place, please complete our online registration form and pay the non-returnable registration fee by Thursday 17 October 2024.

Candidates will be sent an online A Level Choices Form in mid-October to complete providing details of their choice of A levels, hobbies and interests. They will also be asked to write a personal statement outlining their reasons for applying to RGS along with their university and career aspirations and how they will contribute to the wider RGS community.

A confidential report including predicted GCSE grades will then be requested from the candidate’s current school.

ASSESSMENT

The candidate will then be invited to the RGS for a series of interviews in late November 2024. In the morning, candidates will be interviewed by subject specialists of each of the subjects they are considering taking in the Sixth Form (recognising that they may not have reached a final decision at this stage) and an interview with a member of the Senior Management Team and one of the Heads of Sixth Form.  In the afternoon, they will complete online aptitude tests in verbal, non-verbal, quantitative and spatial reasoning.

Candidates from outside the British education system who are not able to take GCSEs will need to demonstrate that they have sufficient knowledge of their chosen subjects to be able to follow the courses provided in the RGS Sixth Form and may be asked to take examinations in the appropriate subjects.

RESULTS

If a candidate is considered suitable and has already met the academic criteria, the Headmaster may offer an unconditional place.  If, as is more likely, the candidate has not yet taken GCSEs, he may be offered a conditional offer to be confirmed when results are published in August.
